Its thick leaves indicate its ability to retain moisture, requiring minimal additional watering, with a watering once every three weeks being sufficient. It is usually grown indoors due to its preference for stable conditions, and thrives in well-drained soil that meets its low water requirements and helps prevent root rot.
Crassula ovata 'Hummel's Sunset' is a temperature hardy plant, surviving cold to 0℃ and heat to 43℃. Keeping it healthy requires taking preventative measures in extreme conditions, such as covering or moving it indoors during frost, and providing shade and moisture in hot weather. Signs of stress such as leaf drop or sunburn indicate the effects of cold or heat. Move the plant to a warmer location in case of frost and increase humidity and shade in case of excessive heat. This flexibility makes the plant suitable for a variety of environments, but extreme temperatures should be taken into account.
Crassula ovata grows best in full sunlight, which helps it achieve optimal growth and gives its leaves bright colors. Although it can tolerate partial sun, low light can lead to poor growth and faded leaf color.
